See You at the Florida State Fair!

February 4, 2013

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida State FairImage Authority will celebrate 500 years of agriculture at this year’s Florida State Fair. The fair officially begins Thursday, Feb. 7, when Commissioner Putnam and his fellow Cabinet members flip the switch to illuminate the Midway in Tampa.

The fair began in 1904 as the Mid-Winter Festival. In 1915 it became known simply as the Florida State Fair. It moved to its current 355-acre site in 1976. Heading into its 109th year, the Florida State Fair is now organized under the leadership of Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam H. Putnam, Chairman A.D. Doyle Carlton III, and Executive Director Charles C. “Chuck” Pesano.

The fair’s theme this year, “Discover the Fun,” features a variety of events and activities designed to raise awareness for the commodities, innovations and people that make up Florida agriculture.

The department’s “Florida Agriculture: Then and Now” traveling exhibit, part of the statewide Viva Florida 500 celebration, will make its debut at the fair. This exhibit is a fun and educational experience that conveys to residents and visitors the exponential growth and impact of the agriculture industry during Florida’s 500 year history.

Entomologists and apiarists from the FDACS Division of Plant Industry will have live exhibits in the Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame building and DPI personnel will be on hand to greet you and discuss our mission..

The Florida State Fair is a time-honored tradition for kids of all ages to enjoy food, fun, agriculture and history. Hope to meet you there!.
