The University of Florida IFAS partnered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to help celebrate 500-years of Florida Agriculture through the Department’s “VIVA Florida 500” campaign. The kick-off event featured a panel discussion hosted by the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and was moderated by Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who is featured in this short excerpt. The goal of the event is to educate people about the important role agriculture plays in Florida’s past, present and in it’s future.

DPI’s blog series, “Five Hundred Years of Florida Flora Firsts,”  traces the impact plants have had on Florida’s history. The series will extend through 2013, coinciding with and supporting the state’s VIVA 500 commemoration of the landing of Ponce de Leon on Florida’s east coast in 1513.
