Volunteer Now to Read in a Classroom April 30, Ag Literacy Day

March 4, 2013

PrintOne of Florida agriculture’s signature statewide events, Ag Literacy Day, will occur on April 30 this year. On that day, hundreds of volunteers will enter classrooms around the state to read to students.

ImageThis year, Ag Literacy Day supports VIVA 500, the Sunshine State’s commemoration of Ponce de Leon’s landing on Florida’s east coast in April 1513. The colorful new storybook covers 500 years of agriculture in the Sunshine State.

Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. is inviting volunteers to register now –-or at least by the April 16 deadline, to read on April 30, or two weeks before a scheduled reading on any other date.

Volunteers can register, teachers can request a reader, and books can be requested and downloaded at http://www.flagintheclassroom.com/agliteracyday.html

Who reads?  Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services employees, University of Florida IFAS Extension Agents, 4-H Agents and Master Gardeners, Florida Farm Bureau members, Florida Cattlemen and Cattlewomen members, FFA teachers, students and other agriculture industry representatives.

This will be the tenth year the agricultural community has rallied to tell its story to elementary students.

The FDACS-DPI team is supporting VIVA 500 with our own blog series, tracing the impact of plants on Florida’s history. We invite to you subscribe to or browse the blog by clicking here.
