Battling Invasive Air Potato “With a Little Help From our Friends”

October 14, 2013

“Help! I need somebody!”

Like the iconic Beatles, we’re “getting by with a little help from our friends.” In this case our friends are the beetles. The air potato beetles, that is.

Air potato is an aggressive, herbaceous vine that can attain lengths of 65 feet in a single growing season. Underground tubers may be present or absent.

Air potato is an aggressive, herbaceous vine that can attain lengths of 65 feet in a single growing season. Underground tubers may be present or absent.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Plant Industry is helping to manage the invasive air potato vine by rearing air potato beetles for release at test sites throughout Florida. These beetles are voracious eaters and have significantly reduced the air potato vines at test sites.

So if you find yourself calling for help to get rid of this out-of-control invasive plant, know that the beetles are on the way!
