Beetle big help in controlling air potato

Score one for the air potato beetle being reared at FDACS-DPI headquarters in Gainesville. Due partly to the introduction of the beetle as a biocontrol agent, the city has discontinued its annual Great Air Potato Roundup and is instead sponsoring the Great Invader Raider rally and Gainesville Greenway Challenge.  Read our blog post here.

Today is Pie Day

Florida-Blueberry-Key-Lime-Pie_recipeWe’re celebrating Friday as National Pie Day, justifying it by saying it fits our mission here at FDACS-DPI. After all, we work every day to protect Florida agriculture against pests and diseases, and many of the Fresh From Florida products make great pies! That’s not such a stretch, is it? (Now pass us a piece of strawberry pie, please. And after that let’s make a Florida blueberry key lime pie.)

Things getting a little squirel-ly at UF

Wednesday, Jan. 21 was squirrel appreciation day. Who knew? The Florida Independent Alligator pointed it out to us in this story, which includes an account by a student of a squirrel that leapt into a classroom from beneath a professor’s podium during an 8:30 a.m. physiology class.

Florida Citrus Show is next week

The Florida Citrus Show opens next week and Florida Grower reminds us pre-registration is still open. The show takes place in Fort Pierce Jan. 28-29. Admission is free to growers, university/government/extension representatives, association personnel and more. Details here.

Horticulture Society seeks presentations for annual meeting

The Florida Horticulture Society will hold its annual meeting May 31-June2 at the Renaissance World Golf Village, St. Augustine. Abstracts for research and extension presentations are welcome and encouraged. Abstract title submission deadline is February 13. Abstract submission deadline is March 13.
