Congratulations, Miss P.
February 18, 2015
Congratulations to Miss P, the regal beagle who won the Westminster Kennel Club show on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. Miss P, from Canada, bested a Florida Dog, Ocala’s Charlie the Skye terrier, who came in second in the show.
We’re not showing partiality to any particular breed as we celebrate both Miss P’s and Charlie’s success. We celebrate all of the dogs and all the breeds serving in the vital role of detector dog. Several of them work for FDACS-DPI right here in the Sunshine State.
But we will point with pride to the fact that another beagle, Linus, a Customs and Border Protection detector dog, has long been the face of the Don’t Pack a Pest traveler’s program. The program is administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Customs and Border Protection. The program seeks to exclude invasive species from Florida and the U.S. by educating international travelers not to transport agricultural products in their luggage. It provides a website, http://Dontpackapest.com, that helps identify products that can and cannot be carried in baggage.
We nevertheless congratulate Miss P as she leaves the stage, bound for a new career as a mother. Who knows . . . one of her puppies with a great Beagle Nose may grow up to be “just like Linus.”
