Throwback Thursday: Citrus Box Labels
June 11, 2015
From the late 1800s until about 1950, Florida citrus was shipped in wooden crates festooned with colorful labels on each end. Popular, but unidentified, artists produced the Lithographs for citrus crate labels which identified growers and shippers. The three decades before 1950 were the vintage years for crate labels, and the labels are now collectibles. Back in the heyday of the wooden crates, people repurposed them for storage, shelving or bookcases. After 1950, the wooden crates were mostly replaced with cardboard boxes.
Florida Southern College has digitized a collection of labels, and they can be viewed here.
