  • Total count to date: 159

  • Estimated end date of quarantine: 01/20/2016 (*provided there are no additional finds)
  • Did Quarantine Area Change: No

An article in the Miami Herald this morning inaccurately reported that FDACS is seeking permission from the federal government to use malathion for aerial spray. At the town hall meeting on Monday 9/21, Commissioner Putnam and others discussed the option of using GF-120 (Spinosad) – not malathion – for aerial spraying. GF-120 is an insecticide certified for use in organic farming. It was granted a “Green Chemistry” award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which classifies it as “reduced risk” because of its good environmental profile. The Miami Herald has corrected the online version of the story and will issue a correction in tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) print paper, as well.
